A shadow market for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to new investigations.
Investigational Treatment Gaining Traction Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Viewers are encouraged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.
Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before directing customers to other platforms for transactions.
Learning About Retatrutide
This medication is an investigational injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Express Worries
Nevertheless, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in individuals injecting products of uncertain source.
Some experts stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Enforcement
Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some influencers try to circumvent the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but advertising and distribution can still violate medicines, advertising, and customer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.
Platform Reaction and Material Removal
Based on the social media company, the platform has removed problematic content and prohibited associated keywords and query recommendations. The organization stated it was dedicated to keeping the platform secure and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Digital Marketplace Activities
Investigations also discovered communities with up to nine thousand members marketing the experimental drug using the platform's built-in search feature, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of users, populated with images of slimming results, positive reviews and detailed instructions for preparing or injecting at residence.
After minutes of entering one group, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases take place. The seller provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.
Product Details and Pricing
Within these groups, posts display dark colored parcels with Royal Mail labels, claiming to contain new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors usually priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a pen should last, vendors give contradictory responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Security Measures
A representative for the messaging service stated it regularly monitored harmful content on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“Individuals are administering materials they can’t verify. Even if the science behind this drug is valid, these online versions may not contain what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to current cost increases for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.
Her staff has already encountered individuals injured by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may subject patients to potentially significant medical dangers”.
