Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week because of the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
