Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication report a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
