EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
